CNC machining allowance should be planned before tooling, not discovered after the first casting trial. The allowance determines whether a functional surface can be machined cleanly without exposing defects or running out of material.

Die casting creates near-net-shape parts, but sealing faces, bearing surfaces, threaded holes and assembly datum often require CNC machining.
| Stage | Purpose | Control point |
|---|---|---|
| DFM review | identify machined surfaces | mark datum and allowance on drawing |
| tooling design | reserve material where machining is required | avoid thin stock after casting variation |
| CNC machining | finish functional dimensions | fixture from stable datum |
| inspection | confirm final fit | measure after machining and finishing |
A common problem is marking a surface as important but not reserving machining stock. The casting may look correct, but the supplier cannot machine it to the required flatness or finish.
Use notes such as machined surface, flatness requirement, thread depth and no-coating area. If a surface is only cosmetic, state that clearly too.
Check machined faces, burrs, threads and fixture-related dimensions after CNC operations.

Too little allowance can expose casting variation; too much allowance increases cycle time and may cut into porosity-prone areas. The right value depends on casting stability, datum strategy and whether the feature is a sealing surface, bearing surface or simple clearance hole. Buyers should let the die casting supplier review the machining plan before the mold is built.
| Machined feature | Common risk | Review point |
|---|---|---|
| Flat mounting surface | Uneven cleanup | Datum selection and flatness requirement. |
| Threaded boss | Breakout or weak thread | Boss diameter, depth and tapping method. |
| Precision hole | Position shift after casting | Fixture location and machining datum. |
Instead of only sending a 3D model, provide a 2D drawing showing tolerances, datum symbols and which dimensions are inspected after machining. This prevents the quote from treating every face as equally critical.
