Tolerance expectations for die casting housings should be realistic and tied to function. Not every surface needs a tight tolerance, but assembly-critical features must be controlled.

Raw die casting can hold many general dimensions, while sealing faces, threads and precise mounting features often need CNC machining.
| Risk level | Feature to check | Recommended method |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | mounting holes, sealing faces and datum surfaces | CNC machining plus dimensional inspection |
| Important | cover fit, boss location and cable openings | caliper, fixture or CMM depending on requirement |
| Appearance | visible surfaces and parting line areas | visual inspection against sample standard |
| Packaging | painted or finished exterior surfaces | surface protection check before shipment |
Before mass production, confirm which dimensions are critical-to-function and whether first article inspection is required.
Buyers should read inspection results by function. A small deviation on a hidden non-functional edge is not the same as a deviation on a sealing face.
Request dimensional reports for new tooling, tight assembly parts or parts with repeated quality concerns.

Buyers sometimes apply tight tolerances to every dimension because the CAD model looks exact. In real production, casting dimensions, machined dimensions and assembly fit should be treated differently. Tight control is practical on machined datums and holes, while long cast dimensions and thin walls need realistic tolerance planning.
| Dimension type | Typical control route | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|
| As-cast outer profile | Mold and process stability | Avoid unnecessary precision callouts. |
| Machined mounting hole | CNC fixture and tool control | Define datum and tolerance clearly. |
| Flat sealing face | Machining plus inspection | Confirm flatness after finishing if coated. |
Separate critical-to-function dimensions from reference dimensions. This helps the supplier quote the right inspection method and prevents price increases caused by tolerances that do not affect assembly.
